Hicks Helps Fight Poverty through Leadership Berkeley
June 20, 2003
Hagerstown, MD -
Michael
Hicks, a professional engineer with Frederick, Seibert, & Associates,
Inc., recently completed Leadership Berkeley, a program sponsored by the
Chamber of Commerce of Martinsburg and Berkeley County. Hicks worked with
a 21 person team of businesspeople over an eight month period to identify
the impact of poverty in the area. According to Hicks, approximately 9,000
people are under the federal poverty level in Berkeley County. He says,
“There are a lot of organizations out there to help”, but they are not
fully aware of one another’s resources. Volunteering through Shenandoah-Potomac
Community Access Program, his team helped to expand the current directory
of services, helped to increase the visibility of the program, and created
new marketing materials. Their effort will allow these organizations to
be better connected and more able to assist people in need. Hicks was
selected for this program for his leadership abilities from a pool of
applicants. He hopes to incorporate his increased understanding of Berkeley
County into his work as an engineer to help improve the county.
